Get Involved

FIU has programs, organizations and committees for LGBTQIA+ students, faculty, staff and their allies. Getting involved means opportunities for personal growth, leadership development, making friends, enhancing your resume, and educating the campus community and others about LGBTQIA+ issues.

Volunteer

The Pride Center hosts several events for students, faculty, and staff to help plan and implement as volunteers and as part of planning committees throughout the year. These are for events such as Transgender Day of Remembrance, World AIDS Day, and the Pride Parade. If you are interested in signing up as a volunteer, please complete the application here.

Internships

Internships at The Pride Center are offered during the Fall, Spring, and Summer semesters under the guidance of the Program Manager. Each intern will develop semester goals that will be implemented throughout the year. If you are interested in interning, please complete the application here.

Intern Hours (5-10hrs)

Intern Responsibilities
1. Intern is responsible for completing all assignments and tasks given to them by Program Coordinator and Program Manager
2. Interns will assist with event programming, marketing/promotions, social media, content creation, and student affairs tabling
3. Intern will assist with content development and student affairs research when needed
4. Intern will participate in daily operations, biweekly team meetings, and any additional shadowing opportunities as they become available
5. Intern will be incorporated in a supportive & collaborative work environment that fosters individual and professional growth

Programs and organizations

LGBTQA+ Mentorship Program

The Mentorship Program provides support, safety, and guidance to our LGBTQA+ students as they discover who they are and grow at FIU. Mentees are matched to and meet confidentially with an LGBTQA+ or ally faculty or staff member to build fellowship and work toward their goals throughout the year. Mentees are also provided space to meet and network with each other online and through special events.

The application deadline for mentors (faculty, staff, and graduate students) is the last Sunday in July. The application deadline for mentees (students) is typically the third Sunday in September. Students are accepted into the program on a rolling basis, but for matching purposes students should apply by the deadline. Check with the Pride Center for updates.

Student Organizations

The Pride Center currently advises the following LGBTQIA+ student organizations at FIU on the BBC and MMC campuses.

Pride Student Union
The Pride Student Union (PSU) is a student-led University-wide programming bureau under the Student Government Association (SGA) that is dedicated to providing cultural, educational, and social programming to the University community. The Pride Center advises and collaborates closely with PSU student leaders.

Stonewall Legal Alliance
Stonewall Legal Alliance is a social and political organization designed to raise awareness of LGBTQ+ issues. We seek to create an environment that is open and hospitable to the LGBTQ+ community at the FIU College of Law.

Through a number of activities, including community activism, volunteer work, panel discussions and guest lectures, Stonewall Legal Alliance will examine the intersection of sexual orientation and the law and provide a forum within the law school to discuss matters of importance to LGBTQ+ law students and their friends.

oSTEM
Out in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (oSTEM) empowers LGBTQ+ people in STEM to succeed personally, academically, and professionally by cultivating environments and communities that nurture innovation, leadership, and advocacy within the FIU community. Students of all backgrounds and majors are welcome. oSTEM is a national organization with chapters across the nation.

Med GSA
The Medical Students for Gender and Sexuality Advancement (Med GSA) has a mission to increase awareness among the FIU HWCOM student body of LGBTQ health concerns, and to improve the competency and ability of HWCOM students to provide high-quality medical services to LGBTQ patients.

Signature Events

The Pride Center collaborates with multiple departments and organizations on campus on a diverse array of gender and sexuality-related events and programs throughout the year.

We also encourage and support students taking leadership in implementing their own ideas for new or reoccurring events and programs.

Individual students should aim to reach out to our office by the end of October in the Fall semester or the end of February in the Spring semester before their planned event for the following semester. Through that communication, we will work with students to determine the extent to which the Pride Center will be involved in the planning and funding of student-led events.
